Annual cycle of a typical songbird long-distance migrant. The bird needs to be present at the breeding grounds for an often short breeding season, but has to leave in time before conditions get too harsh. Knowing when these changes will come requires predictions from often far away. For knowing the time and direction of travel, birds use internal circannual rhythms and photoperiod. They arrange many activities, including change of their feathers (moult) within the annual cycle.
